Melanie Stangl I fell in love with this album from the first listen--I couldn't believe this was a local Pittsburgh band. Monocle City is experimental and completely listenable at the same time. It combines elements of indie/alternative rock with subtle electronic influences, as well as imaginative lyrics. The layers of sound (both vocal and instrumental) are so masterfully woven on top of one another. Each track is a journey, and captures a different mood, but the EP still sounds like a cohesive whole. Favorite track: Lazy Bones.

Track Name: Monocle City
your mettle and your soul
don't wallow in your shame at all
and know

your weary laden sigh
you'd better be on you'd better be on
and soon the road will be

how do you feel when your babies are naked and cold
don't you believe it don't you behave just

pick up your own life
give up a hundred nights
make up your own mind
pick up a fallen rite
don't think up your own lies
and give up a thousand times
just make up your own mind
and give up a hundred lives

your baby's eyes have fallen to me

face your fate, your demons, your heart, your weight
you better be on, you better be on
pull out your resonant thoughts again
you better be on you better be on
shake off your reasons and time away
you better be on you better be on
face down your buried and locked away
you better be on you better be on
Track Name: The Hawk
you'll never feel these bones again
cause they're shattered
under your skin

i'll aviate your apostasy
and we'll trap it
under your skin

blur white lines
visions and days of cloven feet evaporate

you can feel it on the air
on the wind when your face is down
you can hear it on the radio
and all lascivious sounds
you can taste it on the rain

all these shadows ruling in your heart
they will be sated
from boiling out your sins
and this melancholia
thats crawling through your head
it will be sated
from rolling in your heart
when i say go!

you'll never go this way again
cause you're failing
under your skin

alleviate your riddled heart
and leave silence
under your skin
Track Name: Brewster's Gazillions
the day is over
the sun is shaking
it's time to sail
your body is fading
and i can see it
you'd be forgotten in this town unknown
i think it's time to go

it's not like your mother
is same as a melody
a shame your father is
as sane as the moon
time is a rabbit
and life is a carnivore
you'd be forgotten if you were alone
i think it's time you should be on

yeah you should be on

it's not like you love it
the sound of your enemy
it's too late to follow in
the fate of your own
the treeline is broken
your god is never there
you've been forgotten now it's
time to be on

yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah you'll be on
Track Name: Lazy Bones
i wanna see your heart beating
i know it's so hard to say
oh i know
i wanna feel your arms pleading
all over baby
for love
i wanna cry out loud
and sing it soft and low
for you

all the lonely arms are waving
all the lonely, lonely, lazy bones
all your favorite arms are waiting
all the lonely, lonely, lazy bones
give up on your favorite son

i wanna see your heart beating
and feel it around me now
someday you'll see
someday i'll hold it
i wanna scream out loud
cause that sounds easy
your heart is sharp and lonely
cause you don't know what to say
and i can't ever explain it
cause it's too hard to resolve
but you gotta believe in me
cause i know what's wrong
you'll never see, you'll never see
cause i am on

we will miss you when you're gone but
we will never cry for you
Track Name: Room Spins
here come them achey
arms again
below an endless sea
it's no wonder
that i've been
sailing for hours it seems

beyond the lazy
songs that play
a ringing in my ear
it's the sound of your

eye beams
invading my mind
as the world spins
shaking up time
and your arm swings
you brush me aside and away

oh and the stars burn
the radio plays
as your head turns
looking my way
and then i learn
it's not every day
Track Name: Rituals
bleeds into the fog
where razorblades of
lead me with their song
out into the street
where fires raging deep
and thoughts just burn away

jump back
and rip theses fiends apart
now sever the heart and the liver
show me
they can't feel the
horrors of living the sorrows of giving
and patience
arrest your feverish pride
one slip
is surely suicide

screaming and crawling
chasing and falling
feeding and gnawing
seething and clawing
brain dead army

the only fool i know
through fascinating
and waves of ghoulish glow
insufferably slow
Track Name: Okinawa Dream Quest
watashi take ga subete
no yume to nyoryoku
soraki ti omo
hikari to yume

our father
who art in heaven
hallowed be thy name
thy kingdom come
thy will be done
on earth...
system failing

if you think your only place for gold is on the radio
and the road is so much longer
than anyone's even fit to go down
if your heart's in the right place
then some day it will beat in time with the seeds
and make them grow
you've got to try
